Home News Microsoft: Free Windows 10 Upgrades From 29 July!

The Move is Calculated to Appeal to Windows 7 Users

Windows 10’s Home Edition, due to be released later this summer, will be available as a free upgrade to Windows 7 and 8.1 users. The new operating system features a fully integrated Start Menu, where the button interface rests on the side of the menu. While those with valid Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 copies will be able to upgrade for free, the latest Windows is $199 without an upgrade. The new operating system will be available on machines for sale starting July 29 and on smartphones later in the year.  Windows 10 Pro can be upgraded from the Home Edition if users feel that they need the larger features that come with Pro.

Upgrade to Windows 10 for Free

The new Windows will throwback to the Aero Windows theme that Windows 7 had, while maintaining a number of other cosmetic features. One of the most interesting features under the hood is codenamed “Continuum”, which allows a user to move seamlessly from desktop to mobile or other device. A user could start a word processing document on their desktop, for example, and pick up right where they left off on their tablet or phone. Multiple overhauls have taken place in some of the more popular Windows apps. One example is in Windows’ automated assistant, Cortana. Cortana is now even more embedded into the Start Menu, capable of helping users with their device and even telling jokes. Similarly, the music and video apps have seen substantial upgrades, and the XBox app now allows for new features such as game DVR.

Conclusion: Windows 10 is a big upgrade for its users, and it makes sense that Microsoft is going to try to get as many users to migrate over to the new system quickly, especially for users who are still on Windows 7.
