Gail Davis was bemused when Apple called her to say that she had won iTunes gift card worth $10,000 from App Store for downloading the 10 billionth app. She was confused initially as she didn’t download anything. But her daughters downloaded the Glider, a free game, without telling her. She said, “I have to confess it wasn’t me who downloaded it but my daughters.” Paper Glider is a simple addictive game, based on the idea of throwing paper glider.
App Store was launched in mid 2008 and by April 2009, the downloads reached 1 billion. Six months later it hit two billion downloads and by January 2010, there were 3 billion downloads. Another seven billion downloads has happened with in a year. The industry experts say that the App Store’s achievement of hitting 10 billion downloads within 2 and a half years time shows how fast its growth is accelerating.
The 10 billionth download has happened just after Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs stepped down temporarily to focus on his health.
